What I got from Dever is: (1) yes, he would encourage members of his church to get involved in social justice issues as it may particularly suit them, but (2) he doesn’t see social justice as a task specifically for the church in the way that evangelization and discipleship are. He therefore would be hesitant to make it an official ministry in his church.

    Wallis didn’t address point (2) at all. He was talking about point (1) and basically supported Dever there, but he spoke in a way that sounded like he disagreed. He didn’t connect. Maybe he didn’t listen. He was pushing.
