This is true of worship at church. Oh, it is true. And people in the congregation know it.

What are the reasons that lead to a belief in God? – a video of Tim Keller, authors@google

Posted by Don Bryant on February 26, 2009

Tim Keller is worthy of his reputation as a modern day apologist for the faith. This is a “must see.” He is speaking  at authors@google. The follow-up questions are pretty sophisticated and Keller has to work hard to respond, and, if I may say so, with a bit less convincing power. But he still manages to stay in the game. This lecture makes me want to read Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. It has been on my list for some while. Now I have a bit more motivation to get to it. It also makes me want to read Keller’s stuff.

A word to the wise about Lent and fasting

Posted by Don Bryant on February 26, 2009

I think iMonk proposes corrective to unreflective fasting and mindless Lenten self-denials. It reminds me of George Whitefield’s preconversion obsession with ascetism as a way to draw close to God. Once he became clear on the doctrines of grace he never again turned to the rituals of self-denial as a lifetyle. He was a man who was supremely confident that his soul has been set right with God through Jesus Christ. Of course, that made his life continually one of self-denial and works of charity. I do, however, believe that the rhythms of the church year that call for times such as Lent are worthy supports for a life that seeks communion with God. We are not angels absent fleshly appetites and need constant reminders to reengage the battle.

Here is iMonk’s article.
