How the evangelical church handles remarriage

I have been searching for the name of a person who on the basis of 1 Corinthians 7 concluded that he/she did not qualify to remarry because their divorce was not on biblical grounds. Plenty of people do not get remarried, but I have never (and I mean never) met one who did not remarry for conscience’s sake, not in 30 years of pastoral ministry. The church invests so much time teaching about the biblical grounds for divorce and remarriage, but it’s dust in the hand. When peole want to remarry they do so, no matter what. And if they don’t remarry in the church they are attending, they drop out, get remarried and show up at the their next church as a couple. Abacadabra!  That is how the evangelical church handles remarriage. It’s generally okay in most evangelical church to get remarried no matter what the grounds were for the previous divorce, and if your church is a bit squeamish about it, just get remarried elsewhere and then show up at a new church. They’ll be glad to have you and don’t want to ask too many questions about your Christian testimony. After all, what is done is done.And who wants to run an Inquisition anyway? There’s got to be another way.

Yes, folks, it’s the old glandular problem for Oprah

I am still trying to figure out what this sentence means, offered by Oprah as an “explanation” for her weight problem. ” ‘I had just about given up on myself last year,’ she said, adding that her glandular problem fueled her ‘fear of working out.’” Huh? Lose the potato chips, girl. It’s amazing what not feeding your face will do. And, by the way, I think your shows are much more enjoyable when you are obese and a bit less obssessed by how you look. Actually, we don’t really care that much about your weight anyway. Can we change the topic?

Just how much money does Harvard need?

The Boston Globe ran a story about Harvard’s move to radically cut its search for tenured faculty. Their 37 (yes, 37) billion dollar endownment has been cut by 8 billion due to the fall in the stock market. It’s hard for me get my head around their assertion that a 25 billion dollar endowment is not enough to get the faculty they need. I guess everybody is good at the “wolf, wolk” syndrome. If 25 billion is not enough then what are a few extra billion going to do anyway?
