The first few minutes of heaven

NT Wright tonight

Some of us Coasters are going downtown Boston tonight for pizza and to hear NT Wright at Park Street Church. Wright’s a dude! He has an enormous influence as a first-rate evangelical scholar and churchman. I think it is because of his English accent. Reminds me of Robin Hood’s comment in “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”

Prince John: And why should the people listen to you?
Robin Hood: Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.

Okay, you Spam lovers – your time has come

Here’s an article in the New York Times. Who doesn’t have a Spam story? When I was a kid, Spam would show up in the house from time to time. Now I know that when it was on the shelfwe were in bad times. Spam fried in bacon fat and then put on a sandwich with mayonnaise and tomato would be on the menu. Of course, I also grew up eating pig brains. Seriously, we ate pig brains. Dad would mix it with eggs and, like Tofu, the brains would take up the flavor of the eggs (and bacon fat, of course – in the South bacon fat was the great seasoning). I never ate chittlings (pig intestines). When I delivered milk to stores when I was in college, you could see chittlings in stores in the poorer sections of town in containers like Kentucky Fried Chicken buckets. (By the way, this was my first experience in seeing how the poor are taken advantage of – the price of milk went up in the poorer sections of town because the people did not have cars and could not shop prices; the poorer you were the more you paid!!! That still burns me).

I think people remember Spam fondly because it represented families staying together and making it through hard times, like now, with the recession and unempoyment rising.

Spam and eggs anyone????
