One of my reactions to the election is that Americans have said that it’s time to give our full attention to the domesticissues the US faces other than the normal battleground issues of marriage and abortion. I am not sure that paying attention to us has been on the agenda of the evangelicals. We are very interested in Presidents who fill the bully pulpit against enemies abroad but righting our own house doesn’t get the press. But a generational change won’t let that happen anymore. My generation and the one before me grew up preoccupied with enemies abroad – Nazism, communism, Middle East conflict, etc. We are fighters. Those who are coming after us are demanding that the structures of our own culture get the support and attention they deserve, whether it be an intentional pursuit of preserving and encouraging a middle class, building unity out of our increasing and not to be stopped diversity, health care, environment, etc. No matter how people voted, the reality is that a microscope is going to be turned on us, and it will be us looking at us. What kind of people do we want to be and how do we want to care for one another and the place we live? The next four to eight years will be answering those kinds of questions. I hope we are all engaged.
