Today’s Quote 8/17/07

Calvin Miller
I have always been a bit reluctant to give God the credit for anything, in case He doesn’t want the credit.  James Kennedy tells the story of a woman who came to him with a poem that the “Holy spirit gave me.”  After he read the poem, he said that to accuse the Holy Spirit of a poem like that was not fair to God.  God just might not want the credit.”

I have a question about rescuing

Posted by Don Bryant on August 17, 2007

Three miners lost their live last night attempting a rescue of those miners trapped or killed by the previous cave in. I hear time and time again that the rescue cannot be attempted when the life of the rescuers would be put in jeopardy. I wonder about this.

Is the rule that no one can be killed in the line of duty? Is the rule that rescuing must be safe for the rescuer?

Of course, Jesus said that losing one’s life is the cost of following Him on His mission. I wonder if the church has the “by all means the rescuers must not be put in jeopardy” mindset. Who then will be saved? Isn’t the reality that our model for life and ministry is the One who went into the mine and lost His life?

The reality is that Jesus never apologized for the cost following Him would impose. He never felt sorry for those who would give all. He knew that in fact they weren’t sacrificing at all – they were investing. They would receive a return of a hundred fold.
