I’ve been thinking about Britney Spears

The Weekend I Was Going To Relax

Weekends? Pastors? Relax? Those three words don’t go together. But they will in my next life. But apart from the normal craziness I was hoping to get in a Friday night and Saturday that was my own. And then the hot water became lukewarm and the Lord spewed it out. So I had to get a hot water heater. And the dishwasher stopped spewing and I had to replace the motor assembly. The transmission in the ‘95 Park Ave (the Pastor’s version of the pimpmobile as my sons say) decided to do more slipping than transmitting. And the brake warning light came on, too. (Translated – “you are going to die any minute when you step on the brake and nothing happens”). So I had a case of bodies not getting clean, dishes not getting clean and cars cleaning out my wallet. There is a stable near here and I’m seriously thinking about stealing one of their horses for more reliable transportation. That will go with the chicken I stole in the second grade. (I still don’t get why I did that – reminds me of Augustine’s stealing the pear – he never forgot that and always thought that was his biggest sin – but that’s another blog).

I am not a handyman. I don’t do anything “handily.” Any 30 minute job around the house I can turn into a full day. Sharon calls her dad and passes on the instructions for me. Jon told me once that I do pretty well for a guy who doesn’t know what he is doing. Was that a compliment? I guess perseverance is the one thing I bring to the table. Give me a case of coke and peanuts and chips, and I will get it done. So for now the hot water is hot, the dishwasher washes and the transmission is transmitting. A successful weekend. But no relaxing. Maybe it wasn’t successful. I just hate spending money for things I can eventually figure out how to do. My “monied” friends tell me spend your time making money and then you can get people to do this stuff for you. But the only extra money I can make in the ministry is stealing money from the petty cash box at church. And I know for certain that my ministry assistant will turn me in. She already thinks that every copyright law was written with me in mind. But she’s good. She will visit me in prison even though she had to be the chief witness at my trial.

What I want my sons to know

In many ways I think that whatever I have gone through in my life was simply getting me ready to be a dad and help my two sons. Long before they arrived on the scene I was learning lessons, developing commitments, and going through failures so that I could give them what God knew they would need from me…
